How to Replace a Pull String on a Walk-Behind John Deere Snow Blower
John Deere walk-behind snow blowers are available with different size engines based on the needs of the homeowner. The 726E model, for example, features a 250cc Briggs & Stratton snow series engine for reliable service in cold weather. The engine uses a pull start string for starting the engine. Oftentimes it is necessary to pull the starter string several times each time the blower is used. With this in mind, it is not surprising that the string may break, requiring that a replacement string be installed.1. Pull the boot on the end of the spark plug wire from the tip of the spark plug for safety while working on the John Deere snow blower.
2. Locate the blower housing and rewind assembly on the right side of the engine. Remove the screws that attach the housing and rewind assembly to the Briggs & Stratton engine with a screwdriver. Save the screws for use later.
3. Pull the blower housing and rewind assembly straight off the side of the engine. Turn the assembly over to access the pulley. Rotate the pulley side to side to loosen any old string still on the pulley. Remove the old string with pliers, if necessary.
4. Purchase a replacement pull string from a retailer such as a home-improvement store, hardware store, big box or small engine repair shop. Purchase a replacement string with a D-shaped starter handle for easy gripping with winter gloves if the handle is also being replaced.
5. Rotate the pulley to apply tension to the rewind spring but no more than six or seven turns to prevent damage to the spring. Line up the string hole in the housing with the string hole in the pulley. Insert a screwdriver through the hole in the pulley and housing to prevent the spring from unwinding.
6. Feed one end of the replacement rope through the hole in the housing and through the hole in the pulley. Tie a simple overhand knot in the end of the string and pull it tight against the pulley.
7. Insert the other end of the pull string through the D-shaped starter handle. Tie another overhand knot in the string and pull the knot securely against the handle. Grip the handle firmly, remove the screwdriver and slowly guide the string onto the pulley as the rewind spring unwinds.
8. Place the blower housing and rewind assembly back on the side of the Briggs & Stratton engine and secure with the screws that were removed. Connect the spark plug wire to the spark plug.
